Taal Volcano is the second most active volcano in the Philippines and last Sunday (January 12, 2020) the volcano was found actively emitting volcanic ash and steam. The PHILVOCS, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised an alert level 4 or “explosive eruption” in Batangas and to the places surrounding it, including metro manila. Having an alert level a step lower than the max level 5, the authorities evacuated residents within the 17 km danger zone yesterday (January 13, 2020). At present, PHILVOCS is still monitoring the said volcano. Thus, alerting the people of the possibilities of a volcanic tsunami around Taal Lake. In line with these, we listed down ways to protect yourselves and your home in cases like volcanic eruptions.

Why ashfall is deadly?

Many experts will agree to the fact that the ash coming from a volcanic eruption is more deadly than the magma itself—considering the number of people affected. As the ashfall with the sulfuric rain it brings can potentially kill or harm more people outside the danger zone. The deadly air coming from the volcano’s vent could travel up to 100km. It is not only carrying deadly gases with it but also shards of glass. In extreme cases, these shards of glass could adhere to the inner linings of the lungs that could potentially cause silicosis or potential scars in the lungs. Though aside from the stated, ashfall could pose minor respiratory problems like shortness of breath and asthma to those individuals who have healthy lungs.

Emergency Tools and Kit

In cases that you need to evacuate or you have to stay indoors because of the ashfall, here is an illustration of the emergency tool and kits you need to have at home.

N95

The N95 mask is specially made as a respiratory protective device. Do not confuse this with the face mask used for patient visitation at the hospital as those are used for bodily fluids.

4L of water

That is, per person, per day. Estimate how many days before you can safely evacuate your place. Note that tap water could be harmful as it may be contaminated.

Goggles

Ash particles could irritate the eye surface and could potentially cause abrasions to its walls.

Clothing

Make sure to pack some longs sleeves, pants, or jackets that could protect your skin from the potential skin irritation from the ashfall.

Flashlights

Wet ash is conductive, hence, for safety reasons power cuts could be expected during such calamities.

Radio and portable television

Help you to be updated on the latest situation. This will help you make logical decisions during critical times.
