Even with our technology and innovative architectural designs, nature will always be side by side with man. Today, we build houses and condominiums sealed from the outside. All because most homes today have airconditioned rooms. This is the time when we need nature more than anything. Here are some of the benefits of having indoor plants at home.

Cleanses the Indoor Air Pollution

There are many toxic gases indoors that come right from the things common at home. Some of these are the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These come from synthetic materials like wall paint, pesticides, detergents, cigarette smoke, and many more, which form poisonous gases like benzene and formaldehyde over time.

When there is inadequate air circulation indoors, these gasses tend to be trapped at home that when inhaled, could cause irritation, sinus congestion, respiratory diseases, and many more. Having plants indoors prevents these by taking in the poisonous gases and converting it in gentler byproducts.

Improves Mental Health

Many studies have proven the positive correlation between plants and stress levels. One of these is a study from the University of Hyogo in Awaji, Japan which studied the psychological effects of having a desk plant in the office. The office workers were asked to take a 3-minute break to care for their plants whenever they feel exhausted from work. The study concluded that plants were, in fact, helpful in reducing stress and anxiety by emitting calming effects.

Improves Productivity

A study from the United Kingdom compared the productivity of employees in lean office spaces versus green spaces or those decorated with plants. Aside from the objective measures of increased productivity, there were subjective perceptions of increased concentration and worker satisfaction.

All in all, having plants where we spend most of our time in, where we sleep, work, and eat, is a must. Because aside from the benefits of improved concentration and productivity, it helps us live a healthier life. It eliminates toxic gases in the air. And it helps us mentally by also eliminating stress and anxiety. As they say, taking care of plants adds years to your life and life to your years.
