What the Millennial Generation Should Learn from People Power Revolution 1986
EDSA Revolution Commemoration
“Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the future controls the past”
1984, George Orwell
In my younger and more vulnerable years, I have been taught in our history class how great our economy was during the Martial Law. Little did I know that all was just a charade to cover up the impending doom of our country because of debts during the regime. The construction of multiple infrastructures during that time doesn’t equate to development. The 2-peso-equals-1-dollar myth is flawed. The good points are exaggerated. It’s dazzling how easy history could be tampered with.
Reading comments on Facebook, I can’t help but compare our realities to that in the book 1984 by George Orwell. In the book, history books and old newspapers were edited to favor their ruler, The Big Brother. This lie was written in all their literature and televised across their channels. Eventually, the lie became their truth.
Looking at the present, the fault of our generation today is posting uninformed opinions across social media. We use diseases to justify our racism. We label people as “Dilawan” or “Dutertards” as a way to nullify their ideas. In a way, we are all like Big Brother. We are sabotaging the truth by being ignorant.
What are some of the things that we could learn from the People Power? To make informed decisions. To think for ourselves before we share false claims. We should not serve the people who rule us–but serve our country.
Our power as a nation put an end to the dictatorship of the Marcos regime in the past. It was a setback but we evolved as a country since then. Let us not let history repeat itself. As the future of our country, let us not let such ruler control our built principles from the past.
