The Right Way to Take Care of Indoor Plants
The journey of plant caring is advantageous and gratifying. But as people take the first steps as a new plant parent, many fail to do the basics of caring for a plant. They think plant caring is just common sense but not until their first plant dies on them. Read on to know the basics for the new plant parent.
Watering
The best time to water any indoor plant is when the soil on which it sits is dry. Plant experts urge plant owners to stick a finger about a centimeter deep into the soil to check moisture. It is because overwatering could kill twice as much as underwatering a plant. When a plant is overwatered it could lead to rotting of the trunk or roots, which eventually leads to death.
As a general rule, water plants in proportion to the sunlight or heat they receive. This means, during a cold season, water the plant less than the amount that is typically given during summer.
However, there are plants that need moisture. In this case, they require frequent watering with the right amount even if indoors.
Humidity
Humidity is crucial for indoor plants. It is important for the plant to effectively breathe through its pores. It is said that the thinner the leaves, the more it needs the moisture. To give moisture to indoor plants one or more of the following may be done. First, spray warm water on its leaves several times a day. Second, place the plant near open windows or rooms with good air circulation. Lastly, invest in air-humidifiers which could do wonders inside an air-conditioned room.
Sunlight
Plants have different sunlight needs. Some plants prefer indirect light while some like the heat. Although most indoor plants strive well in a low lit room, it might grow best with indirect sunlight. To do this, place the plant in a room with windows or artificial lights. Rotating the plant once in a while is also a great habit so as all sides could receive an even amount of sunlight.
Pest Control
Even if indoors, plants tend to attract spiders and bugs. During cold months, the humid atmosphere and the moisture from plants are the perfect breeding ground for insect infestations. To clean infected plants, use liquid soap or alcohol to remove insect eggs on the leaves. Use a cotton bud to dab spot on the infected area. For long-lasting prevention, there are insecticides or plant oils found in the market.
Fertilizing
Most indoor plants do not need fertilizers to survive. Although, when plants show signs like yellowing and drying of leaves, it may be due to nutrient deficiencies. There are different types of fertilizer in the market, the trick is to which one suits the particular plant. Dry Fertilizer is commonly used in plants that are already established. Slow-Release Fertilizers are used to add nourishment to healthy plants. Unlike Slow-Release Fertilizers, liquid fertilizers are fast-acting. It is used to save plants in distress. Lastly, giving manure is a more natural option. It helps to keep moisture in the soil while giving critical nutrients to the plant.
With proper research and discipline, plant caring is as easy as pie. Don’t miss out on the benefits of indoor plants! Adopt a plant now.
